You don't need a lot of room to grow herbs, they can be grown in containers, and some can be grown indoors.
On my property that has many shade trees, I've managed to squeeze in mints, catnip, sage, oregano, lemon balm, comfrey, chamomile, chives, and feverfew to name a few.
